Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park
One of the world’s most active volcanoes is located on Hawai’i Island (Big Island) within the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. This park was established back in 1916 and encompasses roughly 335,259 acres or 523 square miles. For reference purposes, the park is slightly smaller than the island of Oahu. Because it is an active volcano, the park starts at sea level and goes up to roughly 13,000-feet. It encompasses two volcanoes, Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes and Maunaloa, the world’s largest active subaerial volcano. The park is unlike any other as it is known to have contrasting environments as well as a variety of landscapes. To get a deeper experience be sure to save a day or multiple days to explore the lava fields, rainforest flora and fauna lava tubes and craters Hawaiian cultural sites, ash-covered desserts and alpine tundra. The park is roughly 30 miles away from Hilo town.
