Mokuola the Island of Healing

Mokuola, the Island of Healing, the literal translation in Hawaiian is Moku (island) and uola (life). This is probably where its name originated. This location is said to have been where an ancient temple resided that was dedicated to healing, thus making it a place of refuge for the Hilo area.

The island is also referred to as Coconut Island. It can be seen from the hotel in the bay and accessed via a 250-foot pedestrian bridge. The island is filled with a variety of trees, including coconut palm trees, grass and picnic tables. It is a great location to enjoy a relaxing picnic and the outdoors. It is lined with two white sand beaches that are sheltered by the Hilo pier, making the waters calm to swim and play. For the slightly more adventurous people, there is a rock tower on one side of the island, where the locals enjoy making a big splash into the waters below.
